1987 marked the arrival of the Ford Sierra and although it was a difficult first season learning the ropes of turbocharging, it set up one of the team’s most successful periods. Resplendent in the colours of Shell’s premium fuel brand of the era, the upgraded RS500 version of the Sierra helped set the tone for two years of near-total dominance. John Bowe joined DJR in 1988, and the two-time CAMS Gold Star winner posted his first Australian Touring Car Championship victory at Winton. It was the first of Bowe’s 15 round wins and 30 race wins with the team. Dick and John Bowe secured the team’s first 1-2 championship finish, the team taking eight out of nine wins on offer during the 1988 season – six of them scored by the boss!
